Natural Emu Oil is a traditional Australian Aboriginal medicine and natural skin and hair moisturizer. It is recognized as complementary medicine by the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia (TGA) for the treatment of burns, wounds, bruises, as ointments for dry cracked heels, for reducing scar formation in healed burn wounds, and as a pain reliever for bone, muscle, and joint disorders. This emu oil is fully refined and contains all natural ingredients, including vitamins, minerals, and the essential fatty acids Omega 3 and 6.

This emu oil is milky white, and each batch is analyzed to confirm that all essential ingredients are present at the natural concentrations. This emu oil is highly penetrating to the skin, and thus fully effective as topical treatment.

Directions:

This pure emu oil is for external use only.

Just apply a small quantity every time you use..

This Emu Oil is a powerful moisturizer that penetrates skin and hair very effectively. If after any application it feels greasy, it means you have used too much.

For direct skin application to treat dryness or superficial pains: spread a few drops into the palm of your hand and rub the affected area. Cover with cloth or gauze if desired. The oil will absorb rapidly. There is no limit to the number of daily applications.

For all-body treatment, we recommend one teaspoon in the bath. Use only a mild soap and towel dry.

For dry or damaged hair, spread 2-6 drops into your palm according to length and thickness of hair, start at the tip of hairs and work towards the scalp. If a scalp treatment is desired, add a couple of extra drops and massage scalp well. Use a shower cap to protect, and wait 10-30 min. Rinse with a very mild shampoo, such as the Koru Naturals manuka honey shampoo.

Information About Emu

The Emu was an important source of meat to the Aborigines in the areas to which it was endemic. Emu fat was used as bush medicine, and was rubbed on the skin. It also served as a valuable lubricant.

Your doctors, pharmacists, nurses and dermatologists will be your best advice for the treatment of eczema.

In addition to prescribing the relevant treatment for your eczema, your doctor can give you advice on other ways to help control your eczema. If you are having difficulty controlling your eczema, your doctor may arrange for you to see a skin specialist (dermatologist). Always tell your doctor about any products you may have purchased yourself for your eczema, such as emollients, antihistamines, etc.

Some eczema treatments will be available at your local pharmacy, such as emollients and antihistamines. If you ask to speak to the pharmacist, he/she will be able to advice you on the most suitable treatment. The pharmacist will also be able to give general advice on how and when to apply these treatments, or any other treatments you may have been prescribed by your doctor.

You may get help from a dermatology nurse at your nearest hospital or clinic. The nurse will be able to show you when, how and in what quantities you should be applying your eczema treatment. You may also be given advice on other ways of controlling your eczema.

You may be referred to a dermatologist by your doctor. A dermatologist is a doctor specializing in skin conditions such as eczema. He/she will review your current treatment and be able to give you advice on any newer treatments available to help you with your eczema.

You should avoid anything that irritates your eczema. Many common irritants can be reduced or avoided by following the advice below:

You should wear cotton clothes or clothes with plenty of cotton in them. Wool and synthetic fabrics may irritate eczema. Clothes are best washed with a non-biological powder or liquid. Fabric conditioners should be avoided.

The house dust mite is an allergen and may cause eczema. They live in bedding, soft furniture, carpets and curtains. House dust mites can be reduced by daily vacuuming, damp dusting, airing your mattresses regularly, and washing all bedding and soft toys at least 6o°C. Soft toys in bed should be kept to a minimum. If your child has any favourite soft toys they can also be put in a bag in the freezer for several hours to kill house dust mites.

Overheating can make eczema worse and should be avoided. Try to avoid turning up the central heating and keep your bedroom as cool as possible. Avoid overdressing and try to keep slightly too cold rather than too hot.

Will the family pet irritate eczema? This is possible, particularly with cats, dogs and other pets. If you don’t have a pet, it is probably best not to buy one. However, if you have a family pet, you need to take some sensible precautions. Try and limit the pet to one or two rooms. They definitely need to be banned from sleeping on beds and kept out of bedrooms and bathrooms. Use a cotton sheet for the pet to lie on rather than directly on the carpet, to prevent pet saliva (spit) getting everywhere.

If you choose, or already have a job or career where you will be touching irritants, your eczema may be affected. Jobs that can be problematic are hairdressing, nursing, catering, building and cleaning.

If your child has eczema, you can help them cope in school. You will need to talk to his/her teacher about avoiding irritants at school and the need to apply emollients regularly. For example, make sure your child does not sit next to the radiator. If your child is subjected to teasing due to his/her eczema, ask the teacher to talk to the other children about eczema.

Antihistamine tablets are available which can help reduce itching. Some have a sedative effect and may help you to sleep better at night. They should not be taken during the day as they may interfere with work and driving. You should talk to your doctor about this.

Specialist hospital treatments include light therapy (PUVA) and some drugs. Some specialist treatments may require your admission to the day care unit or ward.

Some people find complementary therapies helpful. However, do let your doctor know if you intend to try a complementary therapy, and discuss these remedies fully with him/her before you start using them. Do not suddenly stop your usual eczema treatments. Remember that treatments called ‘natural’ or ‘herbal’ are not necessarily safe and their long term side effects are sometimes unknown. Any practitioner in complementary therapy who you consult should be qualified and registered.

Topical immunomodulators are available as a cream or ointment, which are applied to the skin to dampen down the immune system and help reduce inflammation. This kind of treatment should only be used in exceptional cases where topical steroids do not work, and it should not be used in children younger than 2 years. Topical immunomodulators should never be used in infected eczema. They should only be started by a doctor experienced in the treatment of atopic eczema.

The immunomodulators are currently under specific investigations due to the potential risk of skin cancer.

Topical steroids are available as ointments, creams or gels. These treatments have been around for years and if used correctly can be used safely.

Topical steroids are available in different strengths (mild, moderate, etc.). You may be given different steroids to use on different areas of your body. Your doctor will advice you on your treatments and any side effects that you need to look for. If in doubt, ask.

How To Topical Steroid And Antibiotic Combination Therapy To Help Eczema?

Sometimes you may find infection can be a problem in eczema. If your eczema is weepy with yellow pustules, it may be infected and making your eczema worse.

However, infection of your eczema may not always be obvious but your doctor will be able to advice you if the eczema is infected. If topical steroids alone do not do the work, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic (to treat the bacteria) in combination with a steroid treatment. This may be more successful than changing the type of steroid you are already on. Many doctors believe that a combination treatment is likely to be more beneficial that a steroid cream alone, even if there are no obvious signs of infection.
If you have a very severe skin infection, a course of antibiotic tablets may also be prescribed.

If you have eczema your doctor may prescribe emollients for you. You can also buy many of them at your local pharmacy. Remember that many moisturisers on the shop shelves are not recommended as they may contain perfumes and other ingredients that will irritate your eczema.

A general principle is the drier the skin the more greasy the moisturiser needs to be. Be careful as some creams may also contain preservatives which may irritate your eczema. You can ask your doctor about this.

Using emollients is the mainstay of eczema management and by keeping your skin well moisturized you may reduce the need for other treatments. You need to use emollients all the time, not just when your eczema flares up.

In some eczemas, for example atopic dermatitis, a daily emollient bath is essential for cleansing and moisturising your skin (your doctor will advice you on whether you should do this). Bathing cleans your skin and makes it more comfortable by removing dead skin cells and reducing the number of bacteria. Make sure the bath water is warm rather than hot.

Cosmetic bathing products may be irritating and may make your eczema worse. If your eczema is infected, bath oils with antiseptics are helpful to some people. Remember to use these for short time only and then return to using plain bath oils.

Soap is very drying to the skin and if you have eczema it is better to use a soap substitute to prevent drying and irritation -your doctor can advice you on how to apply your soap substitute. They can take a while to get used to but work just as well as soap.

If you have eczema on your hands, get into the habit of using your soap substitute for hand washing. It might be helpful for you to keep a pump dispenser by each household sink and take a small tube or pot to school or work.

After washing or bathing, your skin will be more delicate and may be slightly red. This is to be expected. Remember to treat your skin gently when drying. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel (never a rough one), and then moisturize.
